Advocacy Matters (Even When You’re Busy)
How local, state, and national advocacy protects private property rights and our ability to do business
In real estate, busy is a constant.
Between showings, negotiations, inspections, and client communication, most days feel like a sprint. It would be easy to think of advocacy as something happening in the background, handled by others, at a time when we might have more margin.
But the reality is this: advocacy is shaping your business every day.
At the local, state, and national levels, decisions are continually being made that impact how we operate, how we get paid, and how we serve our clients. The ability to put a sign in the yard, access the MLS, negotiate compensation, and operate with reasonable regulation is not something we can take for granted. Those things are protected because someone is paying attention.
That “someone” is advocacy.
At its core, advocacy is simply REALTORS® working together to protect private property rights and preserve a strong, functional real estate marketplace. It is less about politics and more about protecting the ability for people to buy, sell, and invest in property with confidence.
Here at home in St. Charles County and across the St. Louis region, local advocacy matters more than most realize. Relationships with city leaders, involvement in community conversations, and a seat at the table when policies are discussed all influence outcomes. Whether it is signage regulations, zoning considerations, or development discussions, having REALTOR® input helps ensure decisions are made with real-world perspective.
At the state level, Missouri REALTORS® continues to monitor and engage on issues that could significantly impact our industry. Legislative conversations around housing affordability, property rights, and potential tax changes require consistent attention. Some of the most important work often happens quietly, long before it ever reaches the headlines, but the impact is lasting.
And nationally, the role of the National Association of REALTORS® has never been more important. In a time when our industry is facing increased scrutiny and legal challenges, having a unified voice advocating for both REALTORS® and consumers is critical. These efforts are not just about today’s transactions, but about protecting the future of our profession.
What makes advocacy unique is that it works on two levels.
Collectively, it is powered by relationships, engagement, and a unified voice. Individually, it starts with awareness. You do not have to attend every meeting or track every policy to be part of it. Simply understanding that these efforts exist, and that they matter, is a meaningful first step.
As REALTORS®, we pride ourselves on being advisors and advocates for our clients. Advocacy extends that responsibility beyond the closing table. It helps ensure that the environment we operate in continues to support opportunity, homeownership, and a healthy marketplace.
If there is one thing to remember, it is this: advocacy is not separate from your business. It is part of your business.
The work being done behind the scenes today is what allows you to confidently serve your next client tomorrow.
And while your schedule may already be full, there is always room to stay connected. Whether that means staying informed, supporting advocacy efforts, or participating when the opportunity presents itself, even small steps make a difference.
Because when REALTORS® are engaged, our voice is stronger. And when our voice is stronger, we are better positioned to protect the people and the profession we serve.
Advocacy matters. Every day.
